by Omar Tanti

Dr. Steve Weinberg is one of Texas’ leading health care law experts due to his unique background as both an accomplished physician and attorney. He graduated from the University of Iowa’s Medical School, and over the next nineteen years he was recognized as one of the top ten surgeons in North Texas, chiefly in caring for acutely injured patients. He regularly flew his own plane to operate on people located outside the Ft. Worth area, dubbing him the “Flying Surgeon”. During this time, Dr. Weinberg established and managed several banks, pioneered a successful oil and gas exploration and production company, developed residential and commercial real estate, and was involved in ranching and cattle operations in Texas and Oklahoma. Dr. Weinberg also received his JD degree from Southern Methodist University College of Law.

Dr. Weinberg served as president of his Rotary Club and on the Board of Directors of his Chamber of Commerce. He was also on the board of the Cancer Society, his local YMCA, and the Longhorn Chapter of the Boy Scouts, and has been a medical professor in Dallas and Ft. Worth, Texas. Dr. Weinberg was elected to the Tarrant County Hospital District Board of Trustees and oversaw its entire system of hospitals. In 2001, President Bush requested that Dr. Weinberg join his administration and serve as the Associate Director of the Peace Corps.
